Prescription Sunglasses

Prescription sunglasses are one of the best things you can do for your eye health. Not only do they cut down on the glare and improve safety when driving a vehicle in the sun, but they also prevent damage from excess UV rays. There are a number of different types of lenses available to suit every need and style.

What are Prescription Sunglasses?

Prescription sunglasses are just like regular sunglasses, except that they are specially made to have your eyeglass prescription. The prescription that our optometrist writes you for clear eyeglasses can be used to order prescription sunglasses as well. You can conveniently fill this prescription in our optical dispensary  where our licensed optician will be able to help you determine the best lens options for your lifestyle needs.

Benefits of Wearing UV-Blocking Sunglasses

UV light is natural, but excessive amount of it can be harmful to your eyes. Overexposure to UV light is implicated in a number of eye diseases:

  • Cataracts
  • Macular Degeneration
  • Certain Cancers

The UV-Blocking ability of a pair of glasses is determined by what material they are made of, not how dark the tint is. In fact, clear glasses made from the right materials will also block UV light.

Sunglass Lens Types

Prescription sunglasses can be made from a variety of materials. The same materials used to make high-quality clear glasses can also be used to make sunglasses, such as high-index plastics and polycarbonate lenses.

There are also a number of, visually beneficial and cosmetic choices:

  • Lens Color
  • Tint Darkness
  • Polarization
  • Anti-Glare Coatings
  • Mirroring

Provided that the sunglasses are made from the right materials, none of these affect UV protection, so they are a personal choice. Gray is a popular sunglass tint because it merely darkens the world without changing color perception. However, sunglasses can be tinted in a wide variety of colors and have various coatings. For example, brown is a popular tint for driving as it provides better visibility through haze and fog. Polarization is used to cut glare, which is particularly beneficial when you are around water.
