What to Expect During a Contact Lens Fitting

What to Expect During a Contact Lens Fitting

Many people choose to get a contact lens fitting for the benefits of vision correction to avoid bothersome eyeglasses. Other people have abnormal eye conditions that require a contact lens fitting to correct blurry or hazy vision. In all cases, a contact lens fitting is a specialized exam which is conducted by an Optometrist, in addition to a comprehensive general eye exam, to determine the exact curve, diameter, and type of contact lens best suited for your visual requirements.

What to Expect During a Contact Lens Fitting?

At the beginning of your contact lens fittingyour optometrist will conduct a complete ocular history including any history of eye problems or past use of contacts.

Visual acuity will then be checked for both near and distance vision. An evaluation of your tear film using special drops or a paper strip containing fluorescein dye will also be done to check for Dry Eye Syndrome. In addition, refraction will then be done to determine your necessary visual correction needed for eyeglasses as well as contact lenses.

Checking Your Measurements

As your contact lens fitting continues, an instrument called a Keratometer will then be used to check the curvature of your cornea. A computerized topographical picture of the corneal “topography” will also be generated to help determine the best curve and diameter for your new contact lenses.

Your New “Trial” Contact Lenses

Your contact lens fitting will then progress to the use of a “trial” lens which has the exact measurements of your new contact lens prescription.

Usually these trial lenses are worn for 15 to 20 minutes. Your eye doctor will then evaluate the lenses for fit, visual clarity and comfort to determine the final prescription for your contacts.
